No. 4 USC Men's Volleyball Falls To No. 6 Lewis In NCAA Opening Round Match

Ryan Coenen had 18 kills, 11 digs and 5 blocks to help the No. 6-ranked Lewis men's volleyball team defeat No. 4 USC, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23, in an opening round match of the 2019 NCAA Championship on Tuesday (April 30) at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
Lewis, the champion of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, improved to 26-5 overall.
USC, the runner-up of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, ended its season with an 18-11 mark, its most wins since 2015.
Lewis now plays No. 1 Hawaii (27-2) in an NCAA semifinal match on Thursday (May 2) at 5 p.m. PT at the Walter Pyramid. The other semi will feature host No. 2 Long Beach State (26-2) against the winner of Tuesday's other opening round match between No. 3 Pepperdine (22-6) and No. 13 Princeton (18-12).
Gianluca Grasso had 16 kills for USC, while Ryan Moss added 15 kills and 11 digs and Jack Wyett had 15 kills and 8 digs.
Lewis outhit USC, .289 to .238, and had more blocks (17.5 to 9.0) and digs (47 to 40). The Trojans had 20 serving errors, while the Flyers had just 11.
Mitch Perinar added 13 kills for Lewis while hitting .393 and he had 7 blocks, TJ Murray had 10 blocks and Michael Simmons had 17 digs.
USC scored the first 3 points of the opening set and Lewis couldn't catch up as the Trojans hit .353 in the set. Lewis went on a 5-point run to build a 13-8 lead in the second set and USC never got back into the set as the Flyers hit. 368 and had 5.0 blocks. Lewis scored 4 of the first 5 points of the third set and soon pulled out to a 12-5 edge, a margin that USC couldn't overcome as the Flyers hit .414. A 4-point run by Lewis in the fourth set put the Flyers up 9-6 and they held on to the lead until USC scored 5 of 6 points to go up 20-19 and then Troy moved out to a 22-20 lead, but Lewis tallied 5 of the match's last 6 points for the victory.
USC, which was celebrating its 50th season of men's volleyball, made its 15th NCAA appearance, but its first since 2012. The Trojans have won 4 NCAA titles, but none since 1990.
