No. 9 USC Men's Volleyball Hold Off No. 6 Stanford In 5 Sets

Jack Wyett and Gianluca Grasso each had 18 kills and Ryan Moss added 15 kills to help the No. 9-ranked USC men's volleyball team hold off No. 6 Stanford, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 15-10, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (March 29) in USC's Galen Center.

USC improved to 14-8 overall and 5-4 in the MPSF while remaining undefeated at home in 2019 (9-0). The Cardinal dropped to 14-9 overall and 5-5 in league play.

USC hit .298 to Stanford's .239. The Trojans had more blocks (12.0 to 8.0), but the Cardinal had the edge in digs (41 to 38) and aces (7 to 5).

Wyett hit .371 and had 6 digs and 3 aces, Moss added 7 digs, 5 blocks and 2 aces and Grasso hit .371 and had 3 blocks. Matt Douglas added 11 digs for USC, Sam Lewis had 5 blocks and Kyle Gear had 4 blocks.

Jordan Ewert led Stanford with a match-best 24 kills while hitting .346 and he had 8 digs and 2 aces. Eric Beatty had 9 kills, 5 digs and 3 aces, Stephen Moye had 9 kills while hitting .467 and added 4 blocks, Kyler Presho had 4 blocks and Kyle Dagostino had 13 digs.

Stanford got out to an 11-5 lead in the first set, but USC worked its way back and moved ahead 17-16, then the set seesawed until the Trojans scored the final 3 points on a Grasso kill followed by a pair of kills by Wyett. USC used a 3-point run to build a 14-11 lead in the second set and the Cardinal couldn't catch up. Stanford trailed 15-13 in the third set before scoring the next 3 points to move ahead 16-15 and USC could never retake the lead. USC kept getting leads in the fourth set (9-5, 15-13, 20-18, 22-20) and each time Stanford fought back, finishing by scoring the set's final 5 points. USC scored the first 2 points in the fifth set and steadily pulled away while hitting .562 in the set.

USC now hosts No. 8 BYU on Saturday (March 30) in another MPSF match starting at 7 p.m. PT in the Galen Center.
