No. 9 USC Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 10 BYU

Jack Wyett and Gianluca Grasso each had 11 kills to lead the No. 9-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 win over No. 10 BYU in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (March 30) in USC's Galen Center, giving the Trojans their first sweep of the Cougars in a best-of-5 match since 1991.
USC, which snapped a 7-match losing skid to BYU, improved to 15-8 overall and 6-4 in the MPSF while remaining undefeated at home in 2019 (10-0). The Trojans' 15 wins are the most in a season by fourth-year USC head coach Jeff Nygaard.
BYU fell to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in league play.
USC hit .402 in the match and limited BYU to .247. Troy also had more blocks (11.5 to 3.5), digs (30 to 25) and aces (6 to 3) than the Cougars.
Wyett added 7 digs and 4 blocks, while teammate Ryan Moss had 9 kills (hitting .474), 5 digs and 4 blocks, Sam Lewis had 7 blocks, Matt Douglas had 8 digs and Chris Hall had 7 digs.
For BYU, Gabi Garcia Fernandez had 9 kills while playing only the first 2 sets, Davide Gardini added 8 kills and 5 digs, Felipe de Brito Ferr had 6 kills and 3 blocks and Zach Hendrickson had 8 digs.
USC used a 3-point run midway through the first set to build a 14-10 lead and continued to extend it while hitting .484 and getting 15 digs and 3.0 blocks in the set. The Trojans scored the first 3 points of the second set, built the lead to 22-15 and held off the late-charging Cougars (USC hit .424 and had 4.5 blocks in the set). Trailing 18-17 in the third set, USC scored 4 of the next 5 points to go up 21-19 and BYU could never recover.
Next week, USC ends regular season play by visiting No. 4 Pepperdine on Thursday (April 4) and then hosting No. 5 UCLA on Saturday (April 6) in the Galen Center on Senior Night. Both matches start at 7 p.m. PT.
