No. 6 UCLA Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 14 USC

Brandon Rattray had 17 kills and Daenan Gyimah added 14 kills to lead the No. 6-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-22 home sweep over No. 14 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Sunday (Feb. 24) at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.
UCLA improved to 12-4 overall and remained unbeaten in the MPSF at 4-0. The Trojans' overall record evened at 7-7 while they fell to 1-3 in the MPSF.
Jack Wyett led USC with 9 kills and he had 3 blocks, while Ryan Moss added 8 kills while hitting .467, Sam Lewis had 4 blocks and Gianluca Grasso had 6 digs.
Rattray hit .583 for UCLA and Gyimah hit .722. The Bruins' Micah Ma'a had 4 aces and Sam Kobrine had 7 kills, 7 digs and 3 aces.
UCLA hit .420 to USC's .349 and the Bruins served 12 aces to Troy's 1. The Trojans outblocked UCLA 7.0 to 4.5. UCLA had more digs, 23 to 15.
UCLA jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set, but USC tied it at 10-10 only to see the Bruins run off the next 3 points and although the Trojans pulled within 17-16 they could never overcome the deficit as UCLA hit .520 and served 4 aces in the set. After the Bruins got off to another quick start in the second set, 6-3, USC soon after used a 3-point run to move ahead 11-10 and then 14-12, but the Bruins scored the next 3 points to move ahead 15-14 and Troy could never regain the lead (UCLA hit .500 in the set and had 9 digs). After USC opened a 10-8 edge in the third set, UCLA scored 5 of the next 6 points for a 13-11 lead, but the Trojans tied it at 14-14 before the Bruins got the next 3 points to build a 17-14 lead that USC couldn't overcome (UCLA served 6 more aces in the set).
USC next visits Concordia on Thursday (Feb. 28) before hosting No. 4 Pepperdine on Saturday (March 2) in the Galen Center. Both MPSF matches begin at 7 p.m. PT.
