USC Cuts Down Ladyjacks in 3-0 First-Round Sweep

Khalia Lanier became the fifth player in Pac-12 history to record 2,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career in the win
WACO, Texas – The USC women's volleyball team (18-13) defeated Stephen F. Austin (31-2) in a three-set sweep (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Ferrell Center in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The Women of Troy improve to 32-5 all-time in NCAA first-round matches and will meet top-seeded and No. 1-ranked host Baylor (26-1) in the second round on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. CT (6 p.m. PT).

KEY PLAYERS
- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier put up her 10th double-double of the season (44th career) with 15 kills (2e, 36att, .361) and 10 digs, and had two blocks. Lanier became only the eighth player in Pac-12 history to cross the 2,000-kill plateau in her career and finished the night with 2,011 to move up to sixth all-time in the league record books. In the process, she also became only the fifth player in conference history to record 2,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 45 assists and added six digs, four kills, and two blocks. Her career assist total moved up to 2,793 and she moved into seventh all-time in USC history ahead of Tracy Lindquist (1999-2002).
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin logged her fifth double-double of the season (18th career) with 17 kills (3e, 37att) on a season-high .378 hitting percentage and a season-high 16 digs. It was her first double-double since Sept. 25 (at UCLA).
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross posted eight kills (1e, 14att) on .500 hitting and had three blocks.
- For the Ladyjacks, Danae Daron led with 11 kills (2e, 18att, .500). Madelynn Miller led all players with 18 digs and Ann Hollas put up a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs to go with three blocks.
- The Trojans never trailed and were never tied in the opening set and rolled away with a 25-18 victory. Botkin collected five of her kills in the first and added eight digs as she and USC hit .318 in the frame. The Trojans led by as many as eight points, but the Ladyjacks closed the gap to five at 22-17 before USC closed the door on the set.
- SFA came out firing in the second set and led, 7-2, before the Trojans called a timeout and settled into a rhythm. The Women of Troy scored 18 kills (2e, 35att) and hit .457 in set two. Lanier came to life to score nine kills and had six through a big stretch when the Trojans seized the lead at 19-13. The Ladyjacks trimmed the lead to four, but USC finished off a 25-19 win.
- USC was offensive minded in the third set and scored 20 kills (4e, 40att) and hit .400 to claim a 25-16 win. Botkin had six and Lanier had five kills in set three while Gross added four more including the match-clinching point on a slide play from Lázaro.
- USC will meet top-ranked and No. 1-seeded Baylor (26-1) for the first time when the Trojans and Bears take the floor for a second-round match at 8 p.m. CT on Saturday (Dec. 7) at Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. The match will be shown on ESPN3.
- USC and Stephen F. Austin met for the first time.
- The Trojans improved to 127-40 (.760) all-time in postseason matches and to 81-33 (.711) in NCAA tournament matches.
- USC improved to 32-5 all-time in NCAA first-round matches.
- The Trojans improved to 31-5 all-time in the state of Texas and to 12-2 in postseason matches played in the Lone Star State.
