USC Women Heat Up On Home Turf For 75-54 Win Over UNLV
December 14, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans shot a season-high 50 percent from the floor and got a career day from freshman Alyson Miura.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team flexed some muscle in the first half to build out a hefty half-time advantage, then stayed in stride with visiting UNLV to round out a decisive 75-54 victory over the Lady Rebels today at Galen Center. USC had four Trojans hit double digits for the first time this season, with three of them freshmen. Freshman Alyson Miura led them all with a career-high 15 points on a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the floor. USC improves to 5-3 overall with the home win, while UNLV goes to 3-6.
USC was hitting at a 50-percent clip in the first half of play while building out a 20-point advantage on UNLV. The Rebels shot 30 percent from the floor while trailing the Trojans 44-23 at the break. USC had spent a good amount of time at the free-throw line in that first half of action, netting 16-of-18 tosses to outpace UNLV's 2-of-4 effort froth stripe. USC's offense kept clicking at that same pace down the stretch, as the Trojans wrapped the game at 50 percent for the first time this season. UNLV finished at 32.4 percent. USC also won out on the board 43-33 and delivered 21 assists to UNLV's 21.
Alyson Miura's career-high 15 points for USC was a game-high, and she was joined by fellow freshmen Endyia Rogers (13 points) and Alissa Pili (10 points), while senior Kayla Overbeck added 14 points. Pili also hauled in eight rebounds. Desiree Caldwell and Kyra White each dished out six assists apiece, and Angel Jackson had a career-high three blocks. UNLV was led by 12 points from Justice Ethridge and 10 from Isis Beh.
USC kicked out on an 8-0 run with Kayla Overbeck providing six points in the early surge. USC shot 50 percent from the floor in the first 10 minutes to lead it 21-12 after UNLV managed a buzzer-beater at the close of the first. Overbeck stayed the course and got to double digits early in the second. The Trojans were effective in getting the line, knocking down five straight free throws to build out a 33-17 lead. Buckets from freshmen Angel Jackson and Alyson Miura got USC up by 20, and the Miura buried a three for good measure to carry the Trojans ahead 44-20 in the final minute. UNLV answered, and the Trojans were up 44-23 for halftime.
USC's freshmen made some noise in the third, with Alissa Pili scoring back-to-back buckets before Angel Jackson single-handedly snapped an 8-0 UNLV run with a 6-0 surge all her own to make it 56-33 USC with 3:25 on the clock. One last bucket from Overbeck ended the quarter with USC ahead 58-37 entering the fourth and final frame. It was a full-on freshman takeover for USC in the fourth, as Miura, Pili and Rogers accounted for all of the Trojans' scoring in the frame while each cracked double digits on the day in rounding out a 75-54 USC victory.
