Pili’s Double-Double Paces USC Women To Victory At Galen Center
December 18, 2019 | Women's Basketball, Features
USC stays hot on home turf for an 80-43 win over UTRGV.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women's basketball team registered its second straight game shooting 50 percent from the floor and tacked up another big win at Galen Center with tonight's 80-43 victory over UTRGV. Freshman Alissa Pili paced the Trojans with a career-high 23 points and hauled in her third double-double with a 10-rebound effort to help USC along to a third consecutive victory for a 6-3 overall record. UTRGV goes to 5-5 with the loss to the Trojans.
USC shot 40.6 percent from the floor in the first half to well outpace UTRGV's 14.7 percent effort. That helped account for a 20-point halftime lead for the Trojans, who had freshman Angel Jackson in double digits by the break. In the next stretch, UTRGV stayed cold while USC churned out 30 points in the third to open up a 63-22 lead entering the fourth. That's where the Vaqueros finally found its scoring touch, but it was too little too late. USC rounded out the game at a season-high 50.9 percent from the floor, while UTRGV wrapped up at 23.9 percent. USC also won out on the boards 53-34 to set another season best.
In addition to Pili's career-high 23 points, USC had freshman Angel Jackson score a career-high 16, while Kayla Overbeck and Desiree Caldwell wrapped with nine points apiece. Endyia Rogers and Overbeck also added nine rebounds each to Pili's 10 boards. UTRGV was led by Ashlei Lopez with 14 points and Amara Graham with 10, while Desiree Buerge had 10 rebounds.
Five different Trojans accounted for USC's early 10-5 advantage over the Vaqueros before freshman Angel Jackson went back-to-back to help carry USC along on a 6-0 run in the first frame. UTRGV would snap the run at the buzzer, making it 12-7 USC after 10 minutes of play. With the rust off, the Trojans got in a groove in the next stretch. As Jackson worked her way into double digits, Aliyah Jeune, Endyia Rogers and Alyson Miura joined the scoresheet during a 9-0 Trojan scoring surge to carry USC to a 33-13 lead by halftime.
USC kicked out of the second half gates with a 17-0 run, snapped only by a pair of free throws from the Vaqueros. As Alissa Pili got into double digits and Desiree and Kyra White each knocked down their first 3-pointers of the game, USC's would ballooned to 63-22 by the end of the third. UTRGV got some things going in the fourth, netting a couple 3-pointers and manufacturing a 7-0 run to halve the deficit to 70-36 with 4:13 to go. Pili would keep coming, working out to a double-double along with a new career high scoring effort to lock down a big victory for the Trojans tonight.
