Senior OH Khalia Lanier earned her fourth-career selection to the AVCA Pacific South Region team
LEXINGTON, Ky. – USC women's volleyball senior outside hitter Khalia Lanier (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Preparatory) was chosen to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Pacific South Region team for the fourth time in her career as announced by the AVCA on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Senior middle blocker Jasmine Gross (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and sophomore setter Raquel Lázaro (Córdoba, Spain/IES Castilla) were each listed under the region's selections for honorable mention status.
Lanier becomes USC's fourth player to receive the AVCA's all-region award four times. The others are three-time All-Americans Samantha Bricio (2012-15) and April Ross (2000-03) and two-time All-American Jasmina Marinkovic (1995-98). Lanier was the only four-time choice in the Pacific South region this season. BYU senior libero Mary Lake and UC Santa Barbara senior outside hitter Lindsey Ruddins were each three-time choices. Utah's Dani Drews was named the region's player of the year and Utes head coach Beth Launiere was coach of the year. San Diego's Grace Frohling was chosen for regional freshman of the year honors.
Last week, Lanier became only the third player in program history to be chosen for All-Pac-12 honors four times in her career to move alongside Bricio and Ross. This season, she leads the Pac-12 in kills (4.92 kps); ranks second in points (5.39 pps); and is ninth for service aces (0.26 saps). She completed her career in second all-time in school history for career kills (2,025), and attacks (5,410); third in points (2,254.0); and fifth for service aces (136).
Lanier's 2,025 kills rank sixth in Pac-12 history; and she is only the fifth player in league history to collect 2,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs (1,039). Entering the season, Lanier held a previous career-high of 29 kills in a single match. As a senior, she logged four 30-plus kills matches and became the first Pac-12 player in the 25-point rally-scoring era to reach the 40-kill mark (second in USC history; fifth in Pac-12 history) in a match against Utah on Nov. 7. Lanier was twice chosen for Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors (Nov. 4, Nov. 11) this season and was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week (Nov. 12).
Lázaro previously earned a selection to the all-region team as a freshman and was an honorable mention for the Pac-12 All-Conference team. This year, she ranks third in the Pac-12 for assists (10.79 aps) and is 16th in digs (2.67 dps). Lázaro led the Pac-12 in double-doubles (20) and reached 32 in her career. She also holds the distinction of having recorded the first triple-double by a Trojan in the rally-scoring era with 36 assists, 16 digs, and 11 blocks at Northern Iowa (Sept. 7).
Gross received her first-career All-Pac-12 honor last week. She was also a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection (2016, '17) and was a member of the Pacific South All-Region team as a sophomore middle blocker at Pepperdine. Gross ranks third in the Pac-12 for blocks in 2019 (1.36 bps) and her 174 blocks tied for fourth in a single-season in USC history. She was named the Pac-12's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16 and was a member of the Trojan Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Under second-year head coach Brent Crouch, USC faced one of the nation's toughest schedules and finished the regular season with an 18-14 overall record despite myriad injuries and changes to the Trojans' lineup. The Women of Troy went 11-9 in the Pac-12 and landed in sixth place. USC received an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament and made its 37th all-time appearance in the tourney (29th straight) where the Trojans advanced to the second round before falling to top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Baylor.
