USC Falls to No. 24 Washington State in Five Sets

The Women of Troy dropped their first home match of the season to the Cougars
LOS ANGELES – USC women's volleyball (8-6, 2-2 Pac-12) suffered its first home loss of the season in a five-set decision (25-20, 25-22, 26-28, 16-25, 15-13) to No. 24 Washington State (13-3, 2-2) at Galen Center on Sunday, Oct. 6.

- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier had season highs of 25.5 points, 23 kills, and 59 attacks (5e) while hitting .305. Lanier also racked up her second double-double of the season (36th career) with 11 digs and added a career-best five blocks.
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin added 18 kills (7e, 51att, .216) with seven digs.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 46 assists and posted her eighth double-double of the season (20th career) with 16 digs and added six blocks, three kills, and three service aces.
- Sr. libero Raegan LeGrand put up a career-high 25 digs and set a new career mark with six assists.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross returned from a one-match absence and collected nine blocks (one solo) with five kills.
- For the Cougars, Jocelyn Urias (17), Pia Timmer (17), and Kalyah Williams (12) each had double-digit kills. Alexis Dirige led the defense with 18 digs and Magda Jehlarova had six blocks (two solo).
- The Trojans dropped the first two sets, 25-20 and 25-22, despite producing 12 kills in each frame with hitting percentages of .242 and .344. The Cougars used 21 kills in the second set to put the pressure on and did that on .326 hitting.
- After 16 ties in the third set, the Trojans fought through and got a 28-26 win to force set four. USC hit only. 089 but had five blocks and got back-to-back kills from freshman Emilia Weske to seal the victory.
- USC controlled the fourth set and walked away with a dominant 25-16 win behind 13 kills and three more blocks. Lanier delivered seven of those kills herself while LeGrand dug up seven balls.
- The Trojans led by as many as three in the fifth but what would have been an 11-7 lead flipped to 10-8 when WSU successfully challenged the officials' call on the court. The Cougars came all the way back to tie the score and took match point at 14-13 before a block sewed up their first-ever win at Galen Center.
- The Trojans hit the road for four straight matches and get started with contests in the Rocky Mountains next weekend. USC meets Colorado on Friday, Oct. 11, in Boulder, Colo., at the Coors Events Center; and then heads to Salt Lake City to take on Utah on Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Huntsman Center. Both matches will be shown live on Pac-12 Networks.
- USC fell to 51-16 all-time against Washington State, and lost to the Cougars at home for just the third time (30-3). WSU won at Galen Center for the first time and beat USC in Los Angeles for the first time since Oct. 16, 1998.
- The Women of Troy fell to 5-1 in home matches this season.
- USC dropped to 4-6 in five-setters against the Cougars and played only the second home five-setter against WSU ever (Nov. 13, 1987; 3-2 win). The Trojans and Cougars have now played five sets six times in their last 11 meetings.
- The Trojans fall to 1-3 in five-set matches this season (137-86 all-time).
