BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 4 USC women's soccer team suffered its first road defeat of the season on Friday afternoon, falling to Cal 3-0 in a Pac-12 matchup.
The Trojans fall to 11-2-1 overall and 4-2-0 in Pac-12 play, while Cal improves to 10-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in conference action.
It was the first time all year the Trojans have been shut out or trailed by multiple goals, as the Golden Bears scored once in the first half and twice in the second. The Trojans had plenty of chances with a 16-10 shot advantage, but couldn't find the quality finish they needed.
Luca Deza put the Bears on top midway through the first half, and then would later assist Emma Westin on the third goal of the game late in the second. Paige Metayer scored the second goal on a corner.
The Trojans got Kaylie Collins back in goal in the second half, as the reigning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year saw her first action since the opening week of the season. Tara McKeown led USC with seven shots in the game.
GOALS
27' – CAL: Luca Deza (assisted by Abi Kim) – Kim sent a ball back from the endline towards the middle of the area and Deza ran onto it and score with her right foot inside the right post.
55' – CAL: Paige Metayer (assisted by Mia Corbin) – Corbin sent a corner into the box and Metayer poked it home in the midst of traffic.
82' – CAL: Emma Westin (assisted by Luca Deza) – Deza sent a free kick from just outside the penalty area on target, but it was saved by Kaylie Collins, Westin was there to put the rebound home, though.
