PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 2 USC women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season on Sunday, falling 1-0 in overtime to No. 1 and defending national champs Stanford.
In a hard-fought, defensive contest, the Trojans and Cardinal held each other scoreless through 90 minutes, but Sophia Smith scored the game-winner for Stanford in the 97th minute. USC falls to 9-1-1 overall, 2-1-0 in the Pac-12 with the loss, while Stanford improves to 10-0-1, 3-0-0.
Each team had five shots in the first half, with USC putting two balls on target, and in the second half Stanford put three balls on goal, forcing Kaylie Collins to make one highlight-reel save in the 59th minute.
USC had a dangerous chance soon after when Leah Pruitt got loose in the box and fired off a shot that was saved at the near post. The Trojans again had an opportunity in the 82nd minute, when Natalie Jacobs sent a cross into the box and Daria Petredes was there for the shot, but her attempt was blocked.
Smith would get a pass forward from Madison Haley in the 97th minute and make a run up the middle of the Trojans defense, slotting a shot underneath a diving Collins for the game-winning goal.
GOAL
97' – STAN: Sophia Smith (assisted by: Madison Haley, Tegan McGrady) – Haley collected a pass from McGrady and then fought off a USC defender to find Smith running ahead into the box for the score off her right-footed shot.
