Raquel Lázaro Repeats as Pac-12 Freshman of the Week

The first-year setter helped guide the Women of Troy to a win over No. 4 Florida on the road and a sweep of Louisville
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball setter Raquel Lázaro (Córdoba, Spain/IES Castilla HS) was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2, the Conference announced on Monday, Sept. 3. Lázaro repeats as the freshman award winner from the season's opening week. UCLA outside hitter Mac May was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Washington State middle blocker Claire Martin was chosen as Defensive Player of the Week.
Lázaro was instrumental the Trojans victories at the Bubly Invitational in Gainesville, Florida. In total, she recorded 121 assists (11.00 aps), picked up 26 digs (2.36 dps), had seven blocks (0.64 bps), and served six aces (0.55 saps). In USC's win over the Gators, she had 41 assists, nine digs, three blocks, a service ace, and a kill. Lázaro produced her second-career double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs against Central Florida. She also picked up two more blocks and an ace against the Knights. In a sweep of Louisville, Lázaro had 38 assists, seven digs, two blocks, and a kill. She also served a career-high four aces in the win over the Cardinals.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the eighth year (since 2011) that the Conference has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC players have received 19 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and 16 freshman honors. In total, USC counts 75 Player of the Week certificates and ranks third in the Pac-12.
The Women of Troy (5-1) earned a 3-1 win over No. 4 Florida and swept Louisville in the Bubly Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., over the weekend. This week, USC heads to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Marquette Invitational. The Trojans take on No. 9 BYU (5-0) at 10 a.m. CT (8 a.m. PT) on Friday, Sept. 7 and then will face host Marquette (5-1) at 7 p.m. CT (5 PT). USC concludes the tournament with a matchup against Syracuse (2-0) at 3 p.m. CT (1 PT) on Saturday, Sept. 8.
