No. 7 USC Scores Three Second-Half Goals to Beat No. 22 Florida
September 02, 2018 | Women's Soccer, Features
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 7 USC women's soccer team broke a scoreless tie in the 66th minute and then tacked on two more goals late to beat No. 22 Florida on Sunday evening.
It was the fourth shutout of the year for the Trojans, who move to 4-0-1 on the season. The win comes on the heels of a scoreless draw at No. 4 Florida state, giving USC shutouts against a pair of Top 25 teams on this week's road trip.
Leah Pruitt broke the stalemate in the 66th minute with her third goal of the year. Penelope Hocking and Savannah DeMelo sealed the win with a pair of quick goals in the 80th and 82nd minutes respectively.
The Trojans allowed just five shots for the Gators all night and did not give up a shot on goal. Neither team had a shot on goal in the first half, with each squad taking three shots in the opening period, but USC came back with 10 shots and a number of chances in the second half.
GOALS
66' – USC: Leah Pruitt (unassisted) – Pruitt took the ball up the left side and lofted a shot from outside the box about 10 yards off the endline that floated over the keeper and into the right side of the net.
80' – USC: Penelope Hocking (assisted by Savannah DeMelo) – DeMelo sent a pass ahead to Hocking who got in behind the defense and beat the keeper to the far post to double the Trojans' advantage.
82' – USC: Savannah DeMelo (unassisted) – Hocking sent a cross into the box that was stolen by a Gator defender, but DeMelo was there to steal it right back and poke home the goal from deep in the box.
