Another International Medal Haul For Several Women of Troy

Gold and bronze medals claimed by USC representatives at the FINA World Cup in Russia.
Eight current and former USC women's water polo players were in action in Russia last week, competing for four different countries at the 2018 FINA World Cup. By the time the waters calmed, there were six Women of Troy adorned with medals as the United States claimed goal and Australia earned bronze.
Team USA boasted five Trojans, including current stars Amanda Longan and Paige Hauschild. Recent grads Stephania Haralabidis and Kaleigh Gilchrist were also on the active roster, while Brigitta Games served as an alternate and was on-hand at the event as well. The Trojan-powered USA squad went undefeated in their action in Russia, topping things off with a gold-medal performance against the hosts to take a place at the top of the podium.Â
Every USC player in the water at the event had won at least one NCAA Championship during their Trojan careers, including three members of USC's most recent title — USA's Hauschild and Longan and Canada's Hayley McKelvey, whose 2018 trophy was her second. McKelvey and Haralabidis also were teammates on USC's 2016 national championship team. The Canadian team also boasted 2010 NCAA champion Joelle Bekhazi, while a set of three 2013 NCAA champs were sprinkled among three different countries. USA Olympian Gilchrist had reunions with fellow champs — and Olympians — Anni Espar of Spain and Hannah Buckling of Australia. Buckling would claim a bronze medal with the Aussies.
Both standout freshmen in their opening seasons at USC, Espar and Hauschild were neck-and-neck in a race to finish as Top Scorer at this World Cup. After issuing four goals in the bronze-medal game to finish with 19 at the event, Spain's Espar, who was an All-American as a freshman in 2013, edged out Hauschild, who is coming off a stellar All-American 2018 freshman campaign as a Trojan. In fact, Hauschild's most prolific outing at the event also was highlighted by big games by her fellow Trojans. Against South Africa in group play, Hauschild scored seven goals, with Haralabidis and Gilchrist adding four apiece while Longan manned the cage with five saves and allowed just a single goal. Longan would also post a 13-save performance in the USA's win over China during group play.Â
