August 09, 2018 | Men's Water Polo, Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojan is a national and international champion.
Three months after helping USC win the 2018 NCAA Championship, Maud Megens has added another major trophy to her collection. Coming off her sophomore season with the Trojans, Megens rejoined her Netherlands teammates to compete at the 2018 European Championships in Barcelona. Twenty-one goals later, Megens was raising another trophy as the Dutch claimed their first European crown since 1993.Â
Megens, whose 21 goals was fourth most at the event, was one of three Women of Troy in action at the European Championships, with former Trojans Anni Espar of Spain and Jenny Stiefel of Germany also helping lead their respective nations through the competitive tournament. Espar — a 2013 NCAA Champion as a Trojan — pinned up 12 goals for Spain en route to the host's bronze-medal finish in Barcelona. Stiefel, meanwhile, provided eight goals for Germany, serving up a five-goal outburst in a preliminary win over Turkey as the Germans went on to finish eighth.
On the men's side, there were two former Trojans capped up for their respective countries. A three-time NCAA champion and the 2014 Peter J. Cutino Award winner, Kostas Genidounias delivered seven goals for Greece, which finished fifth overall. Another three-time NCAA champ as a Trojan, Tobias Preuss was in action for Germany, which took ninth at these 2018 European Championships.
