USC sophomore outside hitter Brooke Botkin was named the Pac-12’s Offensive Player of the Week
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball sophomore outside hitter Brooke Botkin (Pearland, Texas/Pearland HS) was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and setter Raquel Lázaro (Córdoba, Spain/IES Castilla HS) was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Aug. 20-27, the Conference announced on Monday, Aug. 27. Both Women of Troy receive their first-career weekly honors. Oregon State's Grace Massey was chosen as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Botkin helped power the Trojan offense in its three wins for the Trojan Invitational title over the weekend. She collected 52 kills (4.33 kps) and had a .248 hitting percentage to go with three service aces. She also reached double-digit digs in all three matches and notched her second- and third-career double-doubles. She opened the season with 19 kills and 11 digs in a big 3-1 win over No. 5 Kentucky and then set new career highs with 25 kills and 27 points against No. 13 Creighton. She also matched her career numbers with 57 attacks and 12 digs in the five-set win over the Bluejays.
Lázaro made her collegiate debut with flare as she posted 55 assists in the win over the Wildcats to mark the highest single-match total by a Trojan since 2012 (Hayley Crone). She recorded her first-career double-double with 53 assists and 22 digs against Creighton and guided the Women of Troy to a .248 hitting percentage with 175 kills in the three matches. She receives the 15th Pac-12 Freshman of the Week certificate in program history and the first since Oct. 17, 2016 (Khalia Lanier).
Botkin's selection is the 75th all-time for the Women of Troy. Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the eighth year (since 2011) that the Conference has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC players have received 19 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and 15 freshman honors.
The seventh-ranked Women of Troy (3-0) won the Trojan Invitational to open the 2018 season under first-year head coach Brent Crouch. This week, they will play in the Bubly Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Hosted at Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center by the University of Florida, the Trojans face the fourth-ranked Gators (1-1) on Friday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT); a match that will be broadcast live on SEC Network. USC will also play UCF (Saturday, Sept. 1), and Louisville (Sunday, Sept. 2) in Florida.
