No. 10 USC Puts Away Panthers in 3-0 Sweep

Junior outside hitter Khalia Lanier led the Trojans with 14.0 points and had 11 kills, two aces, and two blocks in the win
LOS ANGELES – No. 10 USC (2-0) put a 3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-23, 25-20) of Northern Iowa (1-1) in the books to move to 2-0 in the Trojan Invitational at Galen Center on Saturday, Aug. 25.

KEY PLAYERS
- Jr. OH Khalia Lanier led the Women of Troy with 14 points collected on 11 kills (0e, 26att, .423), two service aces, and two blocks. Lanier also had 10 digs to post her first double-double of the season and the 26th of her career.
- Defensively, the Trojans got nine blocks from junior MB Jasmine Gross who also tallied seven kills.
- So. OH Brooke Botkin posted eight kills to go with 11 digs and a service ace.
- Jr. MB Madison Murtagh put up a Trojan-career high of seven kills (1e, 11att, .545).
- For UNI, Karlie Taylor had 17 kills (9e, 45att, .178) with 11 digs for a double-double. Rachel Koop posted 35 assists and nine digs. Piper Thomas added nine kills (4e, 25att, .200) with three blocks.
- USC served up six aces and put up 10 blocks to out-hit the Panthers, .239 (41-14-113) to .173 (41-22-110). The Trojans' defense held UNI to a .105 hitting rate in the second set (14-10-38).
- Six different Women of Troy scored in the first set. USC broke the 17th tie of the frame when Lanier earned a kill and then claimed the first set, 27-25, on an error by the Panthers.
- The Trojans collected six of their blocks in the second set and forced UNI into 10 hitting errors. Despite out-digging USC, 20-10, UNI needed a late charge just to get close to the Trojans, who led by as many as seven points (18-11) before pulling out a tight 25-23 victory for the 2-0 lead.
- USC rolled out to a 16-11 lead in the third and stayed on the pedal to get the 25-20 win. Murtagh scored four kills without an error in the final set while Lanier and junior setter Cindy Marina produced three more service aces.
- The Women of Troy conclude the 2018 Trojan Invitational against No. 13 Creighton (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. PT at Galen Center. Before the Trojans and Bluejays meet, No. 5 Kentucky (0-2) and UNI will face off at 5 p.m.
- USC improved to 6-1 in all-time meetings against Northern Iowa and avenged its only loss to the Panthers, suffered in 2017.
- The 3-0 sweep is the first of the season and the first under first-year head coach Brent Crouch.
