LOS ANGELES – With final rosters being set around the world for next month's U-20 World Cup in France, incoming USC freshman Ashley Soto has been selected to represent Mexico in the tournament.
Soto is one of four Trojans who will compete at the U-20 World Cup, with Savannah DeMelo, Tara McKeown and Penelope Hocking all set to represent the United States as well. The tournament runs Aug. 5-24 in the Brittany region of northwestern France. Mexico competes in Group B and will open the tournament against Brazil on Aug. 5, then face North Korea on Aug. 8 and finally England on Aug. 12 to round out group play.
All four players will rejoin the Trojans at the completion of their team's run in the tournament.
Soto has competed in the Mexican Football Federation's youth system for some time now, earning caps for both the U-20 and U-17 squads. She started and played every minute for the U-20 team that won the 2017 CONCACAF Championship to help Mexico qualify for this year's World Cup. Soto also was a starter on Mexico's quarterfinal squad in the U-17 World Cup in 2016.
She is a product of Los Alamitos HS and the SoCal Blues, who also ran track and swam during her prep career.
The Trojans' season starts on Aug. 16 when USC heads to UC Irvine for its regular season opener.
