LOS ANGELES – USA Soccer released its roster for the U-20 World Cup and a trio of Trojans will represent the United States in France next month.
USC sophomores Savannah DeMelo and Tara McKeown, and incoming freshman Penelope Hocking were all named to the 21 player roster this week. All three had already been training with the team recently.
The U-20 World Cup will be held in the Brittany region of northwestern France and runs Aug. 5-24. Team USA will open group play on Aug. 6 vs. Japan, face Paraguay on Aug. 9 and take on Spain on Aug. 13 to round out Group C play. All U.S. group stage games will be broadcast on FS2.
DeMelo is a veteran of the U-20 USWNT having made 36 caps for the squad and scoring five goals. She previously competed with the U-20 team at the 2016 World Cup in Papua New Guinea and is one of three players on the team to be competing in her second U-20 World Cup. The Trojan midfielder is coming off a stellar freshman season in which she was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Freshman Best XI first team and the All Pac-12 first team, after scoring four goals and notching five assists.
McKeown also has notable experience with the U-20 team, having made 22 total caps for the squad. McKeown also posted 13 total points for the Trojans as a freshman, scoring four goals and posting five assists on her way to Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honors. The USC forward will play defender for the U-20 USWNT.
Trojan fans will get their first look at incoming freshman Penelope Hocking when she dons red, white and blue next month, as the Canyon HS product will look to add to her nine caps and three goals for the U-20 squad. Hocking is the 20th-ranked player in the 2018 recruiting class and comes to USC with a host of both high school and club (SoCal Blues) accolades. She is one of six players who did not compete with the U-20 USWNT to be added to the roster more recently by Team USA Head Coach Jitka Klimkova.
