LOS ANGELES – Former Trojan great Robert Stock became the 112th USC alum to reach the Major Leagues after he made his MLB debut last night for the San Diego Padres.
Stock, who played three seasons at USC from 2007-09, was originally drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft. After nearly a decade in the minor leagues and a trip to the independent league, Stock was called up by the Padres yesterday and made his MLB debut in the 10th inning against the San Francisco Giants last night.
Stock tossed a scoreless 10th inning for the Padres, giving up just one hit before striking out two and getting out of the inning. San Francisco would go on to win the game in the 11th after Sock exited the game.
A catcher and pitcher while at USC, Stock hit .269 over three years and compiled an 8-7 record and 3.38 ERA on the mound. He earned All Pac-12 honorable mention in both 2008 and 2009, and finished his career with nine saves, tied for eighth all-time on the USC career list.
Stock entered the Cardinals system as a catcher, but switched to the mound in 2012 after stalling out at High-A. He ended up pitching a season in the Can-Am Independent League for the New Jersey Jackals, before getting another shot to pitch in the minors for the Cincinnati Reds. After ending up with the Padres, Stock garnered attention during the team's spring training and was called up this week to fortify the team's bullpen.
Stock strengthened the Trojans' hold on the top spot in college baseball with 112 alums now having played in the big leagues. That list includes 67 All-Star appearances, 29 World Series appearances, nine Cy Young awards, three Hall of Famers, three Rookie of the Year Awards, one American League MVP and one World Series MVP.
