Cal Takes Series Finale, 6-2
May 06, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team fell 6-2 to Cal in the series finale between the teams on Sunday, despite the Trojans outhitting the Golden Bears 10-8.
USC still took the series after winning the first two games, but came up short of the sweep after Cal scored five runs in the final two innings. The Trojans fall to 21-22 overall and 9-15 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while Cal moves to 26-19 overall and 11-13 in conference action.
USC held a 2-1 lead heading into the eighth inning, but a trio of solo homers in the eighth inning by the Bears gave the visitors the lead. Cal would add two insurance runs in the ninth.
The Trojans went up on an RBI single from John Thomas in the second inning and then Stephen Dubb added a run in the third with an RBI single up the middle. USC would leave seven runners on base in the game, however, leaving multiple runners on in the third and fifth innings.
Solomon Bates tossed 7.1 innings for USC, giving up six hits and three earned runs, while walking none and striking out seven. Brian Gursky tossed the final 1.2 innings, giving up one earned and two unearned runs. Aaron Shortridge tossed a complete game for Cal, giving up 10 hits and two earned runs.
