Dirtbags Come Back Late to Beat Trojans, 8-5
April 24, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team dropped a tough one against Long Beach State on Tuesday night, as the Dirtbags scored six runs in the final two innings to come back against the Trojans.
Four of the eight runs scored by Long Beach State were unearned in an uncharacteristic night for the usually sound Trojan defense. USC falls to 18-19 overall and the Dirtbags move to 17-24.
Long Beach State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring two unearned runs after a Trojan error extended the inning. USC bounced right back in the bottom half of the inning, getting a two-run single from Stephen Dubb and then a sacrifice fly from Chase Bushor to go up 3-2. The Trojans would extend their lead to 4-2 on an RBI groundout from Dillon Paulson in the bottom of the fifth.
The Dirtbags tied things up in the eighth, scoring on an error and RBI groundout. Long Beach State would come up with four runs in the ninth, getting a two-run single from Tristan Mercadel to cap the scoring. Matthew Acosta would hit a run-scoring double in the bottom of the ninth for USC, but the Trojans couldn't rally any further.
USC used three pitchers in the game and got a solid start from John Beller as he worked into the eighth inning for the second straight start. All four of the runs Beller gave up on the day were unearned as he went 7.0 innings, giving up eight hits while striking out four and walking two.
