Trojans Fall in Opener at No. 15 UCLA

The Trojans fall to 18-16 overall and 6-10 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while UCLA moves to 23-10 overall and 12-4 in conference action.
UCLA jumped on top with five runs on six hits in the first inning and would later get a three-run homer in the fifth inning to make it an 11-1 game. The Trojans scored on a John Thomas pinch-hit double in the top of the fifth, but would leave the bases loaded in the inning. The Bruins would add five runs in the eighth inning.
Senior righty Jake Bird tossed 7.0 strong innings for UCLA, giving up one run on seven hits to outduel USC's freshman righty Kyle Hurt. Hurt started off with a pair of shaky innings, but settled in to put up scoreless third and fourth frames.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Thomas had the lone RBI for the Trojans on his double in the fifth.
- Blake Sabol and Stephen Dubb each had two-hit games.
