USC Falls at Home to UC Santa Barbara, 8-5
April 17, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team couldn't keep pace with UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night at Dedeaux Field, falling 8-5 in a non-conference contest.
The Trojans and Gauchos split the season series, with each team winning on the road. USC falls to 17-15 on the year, while UCSB moves to 17-15-1.
After giving up three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, USC pulled back to within one on a two-run single by Ben Ramirez in the sixth, but that was as close at the Trojans would come. The Gauchos answered with three runs in the seventh on a single by McClain O'Connor and two-run triple by Clay Fisher.
USC struck first, manufacturing an early run thanks to a leadoff single by Blake Sabol, a sacrifice bunt, stolen base and then sacrifice fly by Lars Nootbaar. Chase Bushor brought home a run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Brandon Perez scored in the seventh after singling, stealing second and then moving up on two wild pitches.
Austin Manning got the start and struck out a career-high seven batters, but couldn't pick up the win after giving up four hits and three runs. Riley Lamb had the lone scoreless outing of the four USC pitchers used on the day, striking out a batter with runners on second and third to end the top of the ninth. Ben Brecht got the win for UCSB after giving up four runs in 5.1 innings of work.
