Trojan Great Tina Thompson Earns A Place In Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
March 31, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Thompson is the fifth Trojan to earn status as a Naismith hall-of-famer.
Trojan great Tina Thompson has been officially honored as a member of the upper echelon of basketball, named today (March 31) as a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Thompson is now the 10th Trojan and the fourth USC female to be included into the Basketball Hall of Fame.Â
Â
Also recently elected to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on Feb. 12, Thompson dominated college basketball during her All-American career at USC from 1993-1997. She still looms as USC's No. 5 all-time scorer and rebounder and was an all-conference first-teamer for three seasons with the Trojans. Thompson's exceptional college career led her to become the first-ever WNBA draftee in the 1997 inaugural WNBA Draft. After being drafted by the Houston Comets, Thompson led the Comets to four straight WNBA championships from 1997-2000 alongside her fellow Trojan teammate Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. Thompson was also a nine-time WNBA All-Star (1999-2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2013) and earned All-WNBA First Team honors three times (197, 1998, 2004).
Â
Thompson continued to find success on the international stage with Team USA, winning two gold medals in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. She also played in professional leagues overseas including South Korea, Russia and Romania. Thompson won a Russian National League Championship and EuroLeague Championship in 2007, as well as a Romanian National League Championship in 2010.
Â
Thompson is included in an impressive list of Basketball Hall of Fame 2018 selections, including Ray Allen (player), Maurice Cheeks (player), Grant Hill (player), Jason Kidd (player), Steve Nash (player), Katie Smith (player) and Charles "Lefty" Driesell (coach). There are five Trojans already included in the Basketball Hall of Fame — fellow Women of Troy Lisa Leslie (2015), Cynthia Cooper-Dyke (2010) and Cheryl Miller (1995) and USC men George Raveling, Sam Barry, Jack Gardner, Alex Hannum, Tex Winter and Bill Sharman.
Â
The Class of 2018 will be enshrined in Springfield, Massachusetts during festivities from September 6-8, 2018.
