Sophomores combined for 11 goals, with Maud Megens scoring seven in today’s victory.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC women's water polo team received career days from two Trojans today, with Maud Megens and Denise Mammolito combining for over half USC's scoring in a dominating 19-3 win over visiting No. 8 Pacific. Megens had a career-high six goals in the books by halftime, and she'd add one more in the second half to net seven — third most in a single game by a Trojans — to go along with fellow sophomore Mammolito's career-high four goals in this one. The home win improves USC to 16-1 overall.
USC surrendered the first goal of the game as Pacific struck on its first possession, prompting the Trojans to buckle in. Before breaking onto the scoresheet for her career day, Maud Megens earned a 6-on-5 opportunity for her team early. Freshman Paige Hauschild tore off a crosscage bar-in blast to level it at 1-1, then made a field block at the defensive end against a Pacific 6-on-5 before delivering another bar-in bullet to get USC into the lead 2-1. The Trojans would go on an eight-goal tear that saw Hayley McKelvey, Kelsey McIntosh and Denise Mammolito issue first-period scores while Megens got her first to help USC climb to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first frame. Megens would score five of USC's six goals in the second period, wrapping those around a single strike from the Tigers before Mammolito had the final word of the had with a nearside skip that got USC a 12-2 lead before halftime.
The scoring pace slowed in the second half, but USC continued to add to its advantage. Hauschild's hat trick was topped off to start the third, and USC had two goals laying in wait after Pacific got a backhand to go, as Mammolito tallied her third and Brianna Daboub impressed with a sneaky strike that got USC to 15-3 on the way into the fourth. There, freshman Sabrina Garabet opened the final frame by slinging in her first career goal as a Trojan to make it 16-3. Courtney Fahey would earn a 5-meter penalty shot next, and Megens converted to notch her seventh goal of the day. Mammolito's career-high fourth came next off an assist from Alaina Cousineau, and the day's scoring would close out with a rocket from McKelvey before Cousineau put the finishing touches on the USC win with a field block.
USC goalie Amanda Longan and Victória Chamorro split time in the cage today, with Longan gathering four first-half saves while surrendering just two goals. Chamorro collected seven saves and gave up just one Pacific goal while the Trojan defense shut out the Tigers in the final 14 minutes of play.
Next up for the Trojans is another nonconference clash coming up next week when Hartwick comes to town for a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday (March 31) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
