No. 2 BYU Men's Volleyball Comes Back To Beat USC

Trojans fall in 4 sets after winning opening set.
Gabi Garcia Fernandez had 14 kills and 5 aces to help the No. 2-ranked BYU men's volleyball team come back to defeat USC, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Thursday (March 15) in Provo.
BYU improved to 18-4 overall and stayed undefeated in the MPSF at 8-0. USC fell to 5-15 overall and 1-6 in the MPSF.
Jack Wyett led USC with 11 kills and he added 6 digs, while teammate Gianluca Grasso had 9 kills, Jon Rivera had 8 kills in his first start of the year, Ryan Moss had 6 kills and Cole Paxson had 7 digs.
Fernandez added 7 kills for BYU, while Storm Fa'agata-Tufuga had 13 kills, Brenden Sander had 9 kills, 7 digs and 4 blocks and Miki Jauhiainen had 5 blocks.
BYU outhit USC, .274 to .216, and the Cougars had more blocks (11.5 to 3.0) and aces (6 to 1).
In the first set, USC used a 4-point run to build a 14-10 lead before BYU tied it at 16-16, Troy then scored the next 3 points only to have the Cougars knot it again at 22-22, but the Trojans scored the ensuing 2 points
to get all the lead they needed to close out the set. BYU tallied 4 unanswered points early in the second set to forge a 7-3 lead and USC couldn't catch up as the Cougars hit .600. BYU went on a 5-0 run to go up 13-9 in the third set and although USC pulled within 23-22 the Trojans could never overcome the deficit. USC led 15-14 in the fourth set before BYU scored 5 points in a row to build an insurmountable lead.
USC next plays at Stanford on Saturday (March 17) for a 7 p.m. PT MPSF match.
