Hurt Leads USC to Combined No-Hitter of Utah
March 15, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – Freshman righty Kyle Hurt tossed 7.2 no-hit innings to lead the USC baseball team to the program's seventh no-hitter as he combined with Austin Manning and Connor Lunn to shut Utah out 2-0 on Thursday night at Dedeaux Field.
Hurt left the game in the eighth inning after a walk and his 117th pitch, giving way to Manning who got a flyout on two quick pitches. Connor Lunn then came in and struck two batters out to work a perfect ninth inning and complete the no-hit bid. It was the seventh no-hitter in USC history and first of any kind since 2000 when USC pitched five no-hit innings against Mississippi State. The last nine-inning no-hitter by the Trojans was in 1986 when Brad Brink (7.0 innings) and Brian Brooks (2.0 innings) combined to no-hit Cal State Los Angeles.
USC moves to 10-4 on the year and starts Pac-12 play 1-0 with the win.
Blake Sabol led the charge for USC offensively, scoring both runs for the Trojans after leadoff hits in the fifth and seventh innings. Sabol doubled to lead off the fifth and then was brought home on an RJ Bates single. Sabol had a leadoff single in the seventh, advanced on a wild pitch and then scored the second run of the game on a single by Angelo Armenta.
Hurt had to work around six walks in the game, but struck out seven batters as he settled in and looked more and more comfortable as the game wore on. Hurt stranded a pair of Utah runners in both the third and fourth innings, but then went on to retire 11 straight batters before the final walk in the eighth inning. USC allowed just one baserunner of the final five innings.

QUOTABLE
"I was getting ahead of a lot of hitters, throwing my fastball for a first-pitch strike and backing it up with my curveball," said Hurt, who was making just his fourth collegiate start. "I just felt really good out there. I didn't really know I had the no-hitter going until the fifth inning. After I finally realized I was just going into the dugout, taking deep breaths and trying to keep myself composed. It was huge to have Austin and Connor finish that off. Austin did a great job getting a quick out in the eighth and then of course Connor picked up his sixth save of the year. It was pretty fun."
"Kyle really set the tone tonight," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "Giving up no hits into the eighth inning is an incredible feat. He just ran his pitch count up a little bit, but I'm proud of how all the guys threw. We needed every bit of it tonight because Josh Tedeschi was really good for them. I was just proud of how our guys stuck with it time after time. The story of the night is really Kyle throwing 7.2 no-hit inning and what a great job the pitching and defense did."
