Paulson's Homer and Strong Pitching Power USC to Series Sweep of Villanova
February 25, 2018 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – Dillon Paulson hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the third inning and the USC pitching made it stand up from there, powering the Trojans to a 5-2 win and series sweep of Villanova on Sunday afternoon.
Paulson broke a 1-1 tie in the third and then the USC arms gave up just one run over the final six innings to move the Trojans to 6-1. USC has won six straight since opening the season with a loss to Utah Valley. Villanova falls to 3-3 with the loss.
Freshman starter Kyle Hurt picked up his first collegiate win with five strong innings of work, giving up just one run and getting out of his lone jam in the second inning. Brian Gursky tossed a perfect inning of relief after replacing Hurt to start the sixth and then Brad Wegman came in and got the Trojans out of a bases-loaded, one out jam by only giving up a sacrifice fly. Wegman gave up no hits in 1.2 relief innings before giving way to Connor Lunn for his third save of the year.
Brandon Perez hit a sacrifice fly just before Paulson in the third inning to even the game at 1-1 and Angelo Armenta would add an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
TOP PERFORMERS
"Kyle struggled a little bit in the second and did a great job to work through it," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "I think that's going to be big for Kyle. He gets his first win out of the way and I was really proud of him for battling. Then he passed it on to the bullpen which has been great for us all year."
"Dillon had the big swing offensively," said Hubbs. "I thought both he and Chase had great games at the plate. We're going to need it where anyone in our lineup can hurt you, and once again we showed that that's the case."
"I went into that at-bat looking for a fastball, got a good pitch to hit and was able to put a good swing on it," said Paulson of his big homer. "We felt really comfortable at the plate as a team this weekend. We started stringing together some good at-bats and that led to lots of runs and lots of hits."
COMING UP
The Trojans play an exhibition against the NC Dinos of the Korean Baseball Organization at Dedeaux Field on Monday, and host Loyola Marymount on Tuesday. USC then travels to No. 4 Arkansas for a three-game series next weekend.
