SERIES VS. VILLANOVA: This is the first meeting between the Trojans and Wildcats.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans picked up a win at Long Beach State on Tuesday, beating the Dirtbags 5-1 thanks to a three-run double in the fifth inning by Matthew Acosta and six scoreless innings by the bullpen. Brian Gursky got the win with three relief innings, while Austin Manning, Brad Wegman and Connor Lunn tossed three perfect innings to finish off the win.
THE ROAD AHEAD: Following this weekend's homestand, USC hosts the NC Dinos for an exhibition on Monday and then LMU for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.
OPENING WEEKEND: USC opened the season this past weekend at home against Utah Valley, taking two of three from the Wolverines. After dropping the opener, Matthew Acosta hit a go-ahead homer in the 7th inning of game two to propel the Trojans to a 5-4 win. USC then used a six-run fifth inning to win the finale 8-6.
LIGHTS OUT PEN: The USC Bullpen has given up just three runs in 20.0 innings of work. Trojan relievers have allowed only nine hits and three walks in four games this season and have struck out 19 batters.
BREAK OUT THE BATS: The Trojans broke out for 12 hits on Sunday after a slow offensive start to the year.
WALK THIS WAY: Dillon Paulson has worked six walks in four games to lead the conference and sit 12th in the nation. He has a .471 on-base percentage.
SAVE THE DAY: Connor Lunn's two saves have him tied for tops in the Pac-12 and second in the NCAA.
BANG FOR HIS BUCK: Two of Matthew Acosta's three hits so far this season have been three-RBI knocks. He hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning of the second game against Utah Valley and then hit a three-run double in the fifth inning of a 1-1 game at Long Beach State. Acosta leads the team with six RBI this season.
BREAK IT UP: Kaleb Murphy broke up a no-hitter in the fifth inning with a bunt single against Long Beach State. The hit also sparked the go-ahead three-run inning.
COLLEGIATE DEBUTS: Five Trojans have made collegiate debuts so far this season; Ben Ramirez, Kyle Hurt, John Beller, Brian Gursky and Jamal O'Guinn.
CELEBRATE THE 8'S: 2018 marks a special anniversary year, with the Trojans having five championship milestones to celebrate. The USC program won NCAA College World Series titles in 1948, 1958, 1968, 1978 and 1998. USC is the only school that can boast such a feat, with the five titles part of the Trojans' NCAA best 12 overall championships. The program will be celebrating all five of the milestones at a game later in the season and will have content from each one over the course of the year.
DODGER STADIUM CLASSIC: USC will once again play in the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic this year, facing UCLA on March 11 in Chavez Ravine. Leading up to the final at Dodger Stadium, the Trojans will host TCU on March 9 and Vanderbilt on March 10. TCU and Vanderbilt will play at Dodger Stadium prior to the Trojans and Bruins.
