February 18, 2018 | Baseball, Features
USC moves to 2-1 with the victory and will head to Long Beach State on Tuesday.
The Trojans batted around in the fifth, getting a game-tying two-run single from Brady Shockey, and then a go-ahead two-run single from Brandon Perez. Blake Sabol capped the scoring with an RBI ground-rule double.
Solomon Bates picked up the win after giving up two runs over 2.1 innings pitched, and for the second straight day, Brad Wegman held the lead over 1.2 innings and Connor Lunn finished things off with a perfect ninth. The USC bullpen gave up three hits and two runs over the final 5.0 innings.
The Trojans opened the scoring in the second, taking advantage of a Wolverine error to go up 1-0. Utah Valley would come back with three runs in the third, followed by an RBI single from Perez in the bottom half of the inning.

"Any time you have a chance to win a series, you have to take advantage of it, especially at home," said Head Coach Dan Hubbs. "The guys were relentless in having quality at-bats today. We kept at it and were really able to break things open with that six-run inning. The heart of our order initially didn't get things done with runners in scoring position, but then Brandon Perez puts us ahead with a single and Blake Sabol follows that with a double. Brady also got going a little bit today, and that was good to see. Lars and Matthew Acosta are going to be big run-producers for us this year, but we can't always just rely on them. We have to get production from anywhere in our lineup, and that was the case in this one. It was good to see Angelo Armenta get a big hit, Ben Ramirez get a couple of hits. A lot of guys got it going today and that can only be good for the rest of the year."
"I thought the bullpen really did a nice job," said Hubbs. "Solomon came in, was throwing hard and was able to mix his curveball in for the first couple innings and did a nice job to hold them there so we could take the lead. And then, once again, Brad and Connor did what we expect from them at the end of the game. I couldn't be more pleased with how the bullpen threw all weekend."
COMING UP
The Trojans head to Long Beach State on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest and then will host Villanova next weekend for a three-game series at Dedeaux Field.
