Win Number 10 Comes On The Road For No. 25 USC Women
December 22, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojans top UT Arlington 73-61 to improve to 10-1 on the year.
ARLINGTON, TEXAS — The No. 25 USC women's basketball team turned a late tie into a decisive victory with a late hot spurt that carried the Trojans to a 73-61 road win at UT Arlington. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Mariya Moore proved the late-game dagger, as USC notched its 10th win of the season. Now 10-1 overall, USC will turn to the start of Pac-12 play at the end of the month. UTA is now 7-3 overall with today's loss to the Trojans.
USC and UTA were neck-and-neck at halftime, and it largely stayed that way until the Trojans made their late winning move. The Lady Mavericks were more accurate from the floor on the day, going 48 percent overall to outpace USC's 39.6 percent, but the Trojans nailed six 3-pointers — three by Mariya Moore — and went 25-of-36 from the free-throw line in a successful effort to get to the stripe. UTA was 10-of-14 from the line. USC also wound up ahead on the boards 33-32, and gathered up 13 steals while UTA committed 22 turnovers.
USC had three Trojans in double digits, with Minyon Moore a perfect 6-of-6 the stripe while finishing up with a game-high 15 points to go with six assists and five steals. Mariya Moore scored 14 points and dished out three assists. Also hitting double figures on the day was Aliyah Mazyck, who had 13 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. UTA received 14 points from Terryn Milton and 10 from Misty Dossey.
USC kept the Lady Mavericks at bay in the first 10 minutes, opening up a 9-3 lead when Asiah Jones followed two free throws from Aliyah Mazyck with a spin and finish in the paint four minutes into the game. A three-point play later from Cheyanne Wallace helped USC preserve a six-point advantage, although UTA would close the gap down to two in the final minute. Mazyck would plant two more free throws with five seconds left, and USC was up 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. In the second, USC hit a scoring slump, coming up empty on the floor while managing just four free throws during a stretch of UTA buckets. A 6-0 surge carried the hosts into a tie with the Trojans, snarled up at 29-29 with 1:37 left in the half. USC failed to hit from the floor the rest of the way, but received two more free throws from Jones to edge into the lead. UTA had the last word, however, striking down low to level it again, leaving it as a 31-31 lockup at halftime.
In the third, UTA claimed its first lead of the game with a 7-1 rally that got the Mavericks a 41-39 advantage with 2:20 on the clock. Moments later, though, freshman Desiree Caldwell sparked a USC rally that countered UTA's, landing a 3-pointer that was soon followed by a bucket from Mariya Moore. Caldwell struck again to make it an 8-0 USC run for a 47-41 USC advantage with 1:03 to go, but UTA had the last word of the third to make it 47-43 entering the final frame. The Trojans and Mavericks continued to battle on, with a 59-53 USC lead achieved on a score from Mazyck followed by six straight points from UTA to lock it even at 59-59 with 1:59 remaining. Again, USC had a fuse-lighting 3-pointer at the ready. This one was landed by Mariya Moore to get USC the lead with 1:45 on the clock. The Trojan defense stymied the Mavericks at the other end to force a shotclock violation, and then Moore drained another three to get USC ahead 65-59 in the final minute. Moore would hit Mazyck for a runner next, and USC was in solid position to bring home the win as the Trojans closed out the game from the free-throw line for a final 73-61 road victory.
USC now breaks for the holidays before conference play kicks off at the end of the month. The Trojans will host crosstown rival UCLA at 2 p.m. on Dec. 30 at Galen Center to open Pac-12 action.
