The Women of Troy will welcome highly-rated recruits Madison Horin and Kalen Owes to the incoming 2019 freshman class
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball program has signed a pair of highly-rated recruits to National Letters of Intent (NLI), head coach Brent Crouch announced on Thursday, Dec. 13. Middle blocker Madison Horin (Munster, Ind./Munster HS), rated the No. 7 Senior Ace by PrepVolleyball.com and outside hitter Kalen Owes (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS), the No. 11-ranked Senior Ace, will join the Women of Troy for the fall 2019 season.
"Each of these young women are impact players," said Crouch. "Madison and Kalen are fantastic additions to the Trojan Family. They are both A+ people, solid students, and elite volleyball players. Kalen is a six-rotation outside hitter that will push our already decorated outsides from the first day she arrives on campus. I expect her to have a great career and continue the tradition of stellar USC pin-hitters. Kalen is also a highly-skilled passer and a complete volleyball player. We believe Madison has a great opportunity to start as a freshman here at USC; following the graduation of two senior middle blockers. Her time on the USAV Junior National Team has prepared her for Pac-12 volleyball and her athleticism will put her among nationally elite company in a short period of time."
Horin is an Under Armour High School All-American and will represent the East squad in the All-American match in Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday, Dec. 14. She helped the No. 1-ranked USAV Junior National Team win gold at the 2018 NORCECA qualifier and was a team captain for the USAV Youth National Team in 2017; a squad she helped lead to a No. 8 world ranking. Horin was named to the 2018 Junior Volleyball Association (JVA) All-America team and was chosen to the MaxPreps Frosh 59 list in 2015. Horin was a four-year letterwinner and starter at Munster High School and received the Munster HS Scholar-Athlete Award in each of the last three years. Horin plays for the 1st Alliance Volleyball Club in Woodridge, Ill.
Owes was a member of the 2016 USAV Youth National Training Team. She plays for the East Valley Juniors Volleyball Club in Tempe, Ariz., and was named to the 2016 USAV U15 National Championship All-Tournament Team. Owes helped lead her high school team to the 2015 5A Division 1 State Championship, which included a No. 1 ranking in the state and a top-10 final national ranking. She finished the championship tournament with 58 kills and 50 blocks. Owes prepped at Desert Vista HS in Phoenix, Ariz., where USC sophomore middle blocker Abby Hansen also played.
In his first season at USC, Crouch guided the Women of Troy to a 22-11 overall record and a second-place tie in the Pac-12 (13-7). The Trojans played one of the toughest schedules in the nation with 18 AVCA ranked opponents. USC made its 36th appearance in the NCAA tournament (28th consecutive) and advanced to the second round as the 11th seed before falling in an upset to San Diego. Outside hitter Brooke Botkin was named to the AVCA All-America second team and became the program's 42nd all-time All-American. Setter Raquel Lázaro was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and received AVCA All-America honorable mention alongside outside hitter Khalia Lanier.
