USC Women Make Late Rally In Reno For 55-46 Win Over Utah State
November 23, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Minyon and Mariya Moore lead the way with 16 points apiece for the Trojans.
RENO, NEV. — The USC women's basketball team played through its tightest game of the season and proved up to the test. After Utah State sneaked into the lead in the fourth, the Trojans mounted an 11-0 late scoring rally that tugged them in to the lead to stay, sewing up a 55-46 victory over the Aggies at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., tonight. The win keeps USC perfect on the season with a 5-0 overall mark, while Utah State goes to 2-2.
In a game of runs and skids on both ends, USC final push came at just the right time. The Trojans finished up shooting 37.3 percent from the floor while netting five 3-pointers. Utah State hit at a 36.2 percent clip and landed six threes, but USC's interruptive defense proceeded 23 points off 23 Utah State turnovers to help the Trojan cause. USC also finished up ahead on the boards 35-33, thanks to at least one rebound from every Trojan who hit the court.
USC's scoring effort was led by 16-point efforts from Minyon and Mariya Moore, while the sisters combined for nine steals. On the boards, Minyon Moore and Asiah Jones hauled in a team-best six rebounds apiece. Utah State received a team-high 14 points from Steph Gorman and 11 from Emmie Harris, who combined for the Aggies' six 3-pointers.
The Trojans opened up an early 6-0 lead, but Utah State was unshaken. The Aggies fought back and took an 8-6 lead after getting hot from 3-point land. That sparked Shalexxus Aaron, who dropped a three of her own next to push USC back into the lead with 1:55 on the clock in the first. By the close of that frame, USC gripped a 12-10 lead. In the second, USC created some space again, mounting another 6-0 run that was capped by a three from Minyon Moore. And again, Utah State had an answer. USC's 27-19 lead melted away in the last two minutes of the half, and the Trojans were clinging to a slim 27-26 advantage at halftime.
To open the second half, Asiah Jones stepped up for duty, scoring an early putback and striking from the stripe for a key spark to a 30-26 lead. The Trojans would get free throws from Minyon Moore and a 3-pointer from Mariya Moore to make it an 8-0 run to lead it 35-26. Once more, Utah State would reel the Trojans back in, getting to within two at 38-36 before USC got a putback from Cheyanne Wallace in the final minute to help USC to a 41-36 lead entering the fourth. There, the Trojans came up with just one point in over five minutes while the Aggies took the lead. Up 43-42 on a three-point play, Utah State saw USC hit its first field goal of the fourth with a score from Mariya Moore. The Aggies first back to move ahead again, up 45-44 with 4:21 to go. As it would turn out, that would be the final field goal for Utah State. USC roared back to life and scored 11 straight points before the Aggies landed a single free throw with 32 seconds left. Four Trojans would score in that run, which had USC up 55-45 before that final toss wrapped things as a 55-46 USC victory.
USC will finish out action at the Nugget Classic on Sunday (Nov. 25) with a 2 p.m. tilt against host Nevada.
