Trojans Fall to Florida State in PK's
November 18, 2018 | Women's Soccer, Features
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 6 USC women's soccer team played even at 1-1 through 110 minutes with No. 5 Florida State on Sunday in an NCAA Sweet 16 matchup, but the Seminoles advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4.
USC ends its season at 17-2-3, while the Seminoles advance to the NCAA quarterfinals with a 17-4-3 record.
The Trojans struck first in the opening half, when Penelope Hocking made a great individual effort to get free in the box and sneak a shot into the upper left corner. USC would take the advantage into the break despite being outshot in the first half.
A big reason for the Trojans' early advantage was the spectacular play of Kaylie Collins in goal. Collins made several highlight-reel saves and finished the day one off her career high with nine saves.
Florida State would equalize in the 65th minute, getting a goal off a corner to make it 1-1. The teams traded opportunities and saves down the stretch, but neither team could break the stalemate through two overtimes.
Through four rounds of penalty kicks, the teams were knotted at 4-4, but in the fifth round FSU keeper Caroline Jeffers got a hand on the Trojan attempt and sent it just wide. The Seminoles would bury their final try to move on in the NCAA Tournament.
GOALS
37' – USC: Penelope Hocking (unassisted) – Hocking worked her way down near the endline and looked to be boxed in, but fought her way free and fired off a shot that froze the FSU keeper and snuck perfectly into the upper left corner of the goal.
65' – FSU: Dallas Dorosy (assisted by Jaelin Howell, Malia Berkely) – Berkley took the corner from the right side and sent the ball into the center of the box, where Howell got a head on it and sent it over to Dorosy, who volleyed it in.
