
Raquel Lázaro Earns Fourth Pac-12 Freshman of the Week Honor

The first-year setter helped guide the Women of Troy to two wins over ranked opponents this weekend
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball setter Raquel Lázaro (Córdoba, Spain/IES Castilla HS) was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Oct. 8-14, the Conference announced on Monday, Oct. 15. Lázaro earns her fourth freshman award. Stanford outside hitter Kathryn Plummer was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Stanford libero Morgan Hentz was chosen for the defensive award.
Lázaro set a new career high with 59 assists in a five-set win over No. 25 Arizona State and earned her ninth double-double with 21 digs against the Sun Devils. The 21 digs were just one short of tying her previous high of 22. The Trojans hit .299 in the two matches and collected their sixth and seventh wins over ranked opponents. Against No. 23 Arizona, Lázaro dished out 47 assists and had six digs to go with four blocks, a pair of service aces, and two kills.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the eighth year (since 2011) that the Conference has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC players have received 19 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and 18 freshman honors. In total, USC counts 75 Player of the Week certificates and ranks third in the Pac-12.
The Trojans' 18 freshman awards rank second (Stanford, 22 in the league. Lázaro's four honors ranks third in school history behind Ebony Nwanebu (2013) who had six and Samantha Bricio's five selections in 2012.
The 14th-ranked Women of Troy (14-5, 6-2 Pac-12) swept the home weekend with wins over the Arizonas and now complete the front half of Pac-12 matches with a trip to the Pacific Northwest. The Trojans meet No. 19 Washington (13-5, 5-3 Pac-12) on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. PT at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle; and then head to Pullman, Wash., for a match-up against No. 23 Washington State (13-5, 4-4) on Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. Both matches will be carried live on the Pac-12 Networks with distribution on the national network, Pac-12 Los Angeles, and Pac-12 Washington.
