Brigitta Games wins gold with Team USA; Flora Bolonyai takes silver with Hungary.
Three USC women's water polo players were in action in Taipei at the 2017 World University Games, with strong efforts made by each in representing their respective countries. Current Trojan Hayley McKelvey was capped up with Canada before she kicks off her senior season at Troy. The Canadians had a tough draw in facing the USA in the quarterfinals, but thanks in part to McKelvey, Canada won its last two games to take fifth at the event. Meanwhile, two former Trojans — recent grad Brigitta Games and 2013 grad Flora Bolonyai — were pitted against one another in the gold-medal match early this morning. In a high-scoring affair, it was Games and Team USA that took the top spot on the podium with gold medals, while goalie Bolonyai and her Hungarian team wrapped up their time in Taipei adorned in silver.
All three Trojans boast NCAA championships during their time at Troy. Bolonyai was the NCAA MVP in 2013 when the Women of Troy won an epic national championship in overtime. Games and McKelvey were teammates on USC's 2016 NCAA Championship team.
In Taipei, McKelvey tacked up seven goals across Canada's eight games played, providing a pair of goals in the fifth-place win over Australia as well a two goals in a losing effort to Russia during group play. Games went biggest with a three-goal outing in a victory over Italy. She'd finish with six goals scored in all, including a semifinal blast against Japan. A 2012 Olympian, Bolonyai capped up in the cage in all eight games for Hungary, sharing time in a few tilts while accumulating 19 total saves. She gathered in six saves in Hungary's quarterfinal win over France and five in the semifinal victory over Russia, including a 5-meter stop to help anchor Hungary's spot in the final.Â
