Sophomore Louise Hansson wins twice Saturday, earns Swimmer of Meet Honor
Sophomore Louise Hansson accounted for two of USC's four first-place swims as the Trojans won the SMU Classic by a half point on the second and final day of action in Lewiston, Texas, on Saturday (Oct. 14).
USC, which held a slim lead after Friday's racing, took third in the 200y free relay behind Louisville's first, but it was just enough to give USC the meet title with 331 points to the Cardinals' 330.5. Michigan was third (322) with UCLA fourth (239.5), Miami fifth (230) and host SMU sixth (209).
"It was a great team effort by the women this weekend," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "They battled every race and struck gold in a lot of events. It was a lot of fun watching the team rally around the win. It's a great start to the season learning to win against tough competition."
Hansson earned Swimmer of the Meet honors after winning three races in the two-day competition.
The Trojans opened the second day of swimming with a third in the 200y medley relay as senior Hannah Weiss, juniors Riley Scott and Maddie Wright and freshman Marta Ciesla went 1:39.40.
Wright came back to swim the 500y free and finished third in the A heat with a 4:47.21 (just under the NCAA B standard) while sophomore Tatum Wade was third in the B heat (4:45.95).
Scott won her specialty, the 200y breast, in a 2:08.20, 1.02 off an NCAA A cut, while freshman Maggie Aroesty actually posted a faster time to win the B heat with a PR 2:08.01.
Hansson made it two wins in a row with a 1:52.26 to win the 200y back, just 0.98 off Kendyl Stewart's school record and a B cut. It is also five seconds better than her best 2017 time. Weiss was fourth in the B heat (1:58.84).
Ciesla, in the 100y free, finished third in the A heat in 49.56, a season best and B cut, with senior Lexie Malazdrewicz third in the B heat in 49.99.
Sophomore diver Carly Souza was fifth in the 3-meter with 243.90.
Wright made it three wins on the day for Troy with a 1:54.97 to claim the 200y fly, 1.17 off an A cut. Wade was fourth in the B heat in 1:59.58.
Hansson won her second race of the night with a 1:55.80 to hit the wall first in the 200y IM in 1:55.80, 0.80 off an A cut. Scott won the B heat in 1:57.75.
That led into the closing relay as Troy's Hansson, Wade, Malazdreicz and Ciesla posted a third in 1:30.45.
