The USC men's volleyball team spent their time off the court this summer interning and developing skills for their lives after volleyball. With no mandatory summer training, the players were encouraged to use their time to focus on exploring potential career paths.
"Our coaches definitely stress academics, and they emphasize the importance of being a student-athlete. They really appreciate us doing internships and getting experience over the summer. We don't have any volleyball scheduled over the summer so we can get involved in the workforce," said junior libero Matt Douglas. "Our coaches are always checking in on us and seeing what we are up to. They are pleased when they hear that we are doing internships and are involved in different activities outside of the gym."
Douglas interned in Beverly Hills, Calif. at Kennedy Wilson Real Estate Company, and he believes his experience there was a, "good stepping stone for the real world in a few years."
The USC men's volleyball coaching staff, comprised of head coach Jeff Nygaard and assistant coaches Todd Hollenbeck and Gary Sato, provide the players with motivation to achieve success in all areas of their lives.
"While volleyball is important, the coaches stress the perspective that it is also a temporary part of our lives and the decisions I make in the classroom and in the summer for internships are going to impact my life in the long term," said senior middle blocker Connor Inlow. "They keep our heads in the right spot and help us to realize how critical the other parts of our lives are outside of volleyball."
Inlow interned at the LA County District Attorney's Office at the Compton Courthouse. He plans to attend law school and left his summer internship, "inspired and happy with [his] choice of career path."
"The networking that USC provides is incomparable," said senior outside hitter Jack Wyett who interned at both the Irvine Company and Newmark Grubb Knight Frank Commercial Real Estate. "USC has so many resources. The coaches also have implemented a study hall hour so we have a lot of great quality time to work on assignments."
In addition to those three, more USC men's volleyball players were able to secure impressive summer internships. Sophomore libero Michael Chang was a business valuation intern at Andersen Tax, junior middle blocker Ryan Moss was a marketing intern at Kobe Inc., and junior outside hitter Woody Cook was a development intern at the CBRE Group.
