LOS ANGELES -- The USC women's volleyball team (11-6, 3-3 Pac-12) travels to the Beaver State for weekend matchups against No. 16 Oregon (12-3, 5-1) and Oregon State (8-9, 1-5). The Women of Troy will meet the Ducks at Matthew Knight Arena (Eugene, Ore.) on Friday (Oct. 14) in an 8 p.m. PT match and then face the Beavers at Gill Coliseum (Corvallis, Ore.) on Sunday (Oct. 16) at noon. Both matches will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Oregon with Anne Marie Anderson and Holly McPeak on the broadcast.
The Trojans are coming off a rough 3-0 sweep at the hands of a now streaking Arizona squad. The loss ended USC's three-match winning streak and left the Women of Troy at .500 in home matches (6-6) this season. Despite the rough patch, USC celebrated the program's 1,000th victory with a win over Arizona State thanks to the eighth double-double logged by freshman outside hitter Khalia Lanier who had a career night with 22 kills. Senior libero Taylor Whittingham continues her steady climb through the Trojan record books and is just three digs from moving into fifth all-time in career digs at USC (1,483 and counting).
LAST TIME OUT: The Women of Troy split home matches at Galen Center with Arizona State (3-1 win) and Arizona (3-0 loss). The victory over the Sun Devils was the program's 1,000th all-time and made the Trojans just the 17th school in NCAA Division I history to reach the 1K milestone. Unfortunately, just two days later, USC had its three-match winning streak snapped in an upset at the hands of the Wildcats. It was the Trojans' third three-set loss of the season; all played at the Galen Center. In USC's win over the Sun Devils, OH Khalia Lanier logged her eighth double-double of the year with a career-high 22 kills and 11 digs. Libero Taylor Whittingham moved up one spot into sixth all-time at USC in career digs and finished with 1,483 at the conclusion of the weekend. She needs just three digs to move into fifth all-time.
1,000 SHIPS: USC's win over Arizona State (Oct. 5) was the program's 1,000th all-time victory. The Trojans became the 17th program in NCAA Division I women's volleyball history to reach the 1K milestone. USC is the owner of six national championships (three AIAW and three NCAA) and has won eight conference crowns including two since the inception of the Pac-12 in 2011. Head coach Mick Haley has led USC to each of its 100-match milestones since the program's 600th win. The Trojans won their 800th, 900th, and 1,000th all in home matches under Haley's direction.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Trojans are 5-0 in matches away from Galen Center this season. USC has only played three true road matches and won each of those: 3-1 at Rice, 3-1 at No. 20 Colorado, and 3-2 at No. 25 Utah. The Trojans also earned a pair of neutral-location sweeps over Sam Houston State and Oakland in a tournament held in Houston.
FRESH PHENOM: Freshman OH Khalia Lanier was the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2016 and through 17 collegiate matches, has already produced eight double-doubles. She was named the Most Valuable Player at USC's second tournament, the Radisson Classic, and has been on each of the Trojans' pre-conference all-tournament teams. Lanier, who averages 3.84 kills and 4.35 points per set is the only freshman to rank among the top 10 in the Pac-12 in each of those statistical categories.
