BRISTOL, Conn. -- USC senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio was named the espnW National Player of the Week on Wednesday, Sept. 30. It is the second-career weekly national accolade for the 6-2 native of Guadalajara, Mexico, who received AVCA National Player of the Week honors as a freshman on Oct. 9, 2012.
Earlier this week, Bricio earned her fourth selection (seventh of her career) as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and is the first player ever to receive four awards in a five-week span in conference history. She also became just the seventh player in league history to receive Pac-12 Player of the Week honors seven or more times in her career and is the most lauded player in USC history. All-Americans Natalie Hagglund, Asia Kaczor, and Jennifer Kessy were each honored by the Pac-12 five times in their careers.
In a pair of tough Pac-12 road matches, Bricio led the Trojans to victories with 14.0 points against No. 13 UCLA and a career-high 34.0 points against No. 8 Stanford. Through the two matches, Bricio moved into fifth place at USC for career kills and now has 1,655 to her name as she surpassed Lonise Norfleet (1987-90; 1,636 kills). She also picked up 10 digs in the win against the Cardinal to log her fourth double-double of the season; the 45th of her career. Not only did Bricio score 27 kills against Stanford, she served five aces to mark the 17th time in her career that she has had five aces or more in the same match. It was also the 34th time in her career that she has had at least three in the same outing. In the two matches, Bricio totaled 48.0 points on 37 kills (13e, 101att) while hitting .238, had six aces, 18 digs, and eight blocks.
The second-ranked Women of Troy are 14-0 (2-0 Pac-12) to start the season for the fourth time under head coach Mick Haley. It is the program's best start to a season since his 2006 squad went 17-0 to begin the year. The Trojans are back at Galen Center this week to host Washington State (12-2, 1-1 Pac-12) on Friday, Oct. 2 (7 p.m. PT) and No. 5 Washington (12-0, 2-0) on Sunday, Oct. 4 (1 p.m.). The Trojans and the Huskies will meet live on the Pac-12 Networks for the Sunday matinee.
