SEATTLE -- The No. 1-ranked USC women's volleyball team (22-1, 10-1 Pac-12) had its 22-match winning streak stopped by No. 5 Washington (19-2, 9-2 Pac-12) in a 3-0 loss (26-24, 25-21, 25-15) to the Huskies on Friday, Oct. 30, at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Women of Troy had won the program's most matches in a row since a 52-match streak that spanned from 2002 to 2004.
USC was held to its lowest hitting percentage of the season at .147 (36k, 19e, 116att) and was outpaced by the Washington attack (.218, 16e, 142att), which produced 47 kills. The Trojans did out-block the top blocking team in the Pac-12 by an 8-6 edge and held a 65-53 advantage in the digging game. In a matchup of two of the top serving teams in the conference, both squads served eight errors apiece. The Huskies had the only ace of the match.
The Trojans got 17 kills from senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio (7e, 46att, .217) who also had 11 digs for her 11th double-double of the season (51st of her career). Sophomore opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie produced 11 kills (3e, 27att, .296) and had five digs and three blocks. Senior middle blocker Alicia Ogoms led the team with six blocks and added three kills (0e, 9att, .333). Freshman setter Baylee Johnson threw in three kills to go with 17 assists and a career-high 14 digs. It was Johnson's 10th double-double of the season. Junior libero Taylor Whittingham and freshman defender Victoria Garrick had 12 digs each.
For the Huskies, both Bailey Tanner (5e, 32att, .250) and Tia Scambray (5e, 34att, .235) scored 13 kills. Scambray picked up the double-double with 12 digs. Cassie Strickland led all players with 17 digs. The Trojans held Lianna Sybeldon to just five kills (1e) on 17 swings.
The first set was tied 16 times and the lead changed hands three times before the Huskies finished off a 26-24 victory. Both teams served four errors and there were 45 digs (24 for USC) between the Trojans and Huskies. USC pulled even at 24-all to save one set point, but the Huskies stood fast to earn the final two points for the win.
USC fell behind by four, 14-10, in the second set, but fought back to get within a point at 22-21 to force the Huskies to call timeout and think things over. Washington came out and scored the final three points with one from Melanie Wade and the back pair from Tanner to secure a 25-21 victory.
The Trojans held a 3-2 lead in the third set, but the Huskies gave no quarter and ripped open the set with an 8-2 run for a 10-5 lead. Tanner's serves stretched the Washington lead to 10 at 22-12, but the Trojans wouldn't go quietly. USC scored a couple more points before the Huskies closed out the 25-15 win to finish off the sweep.
