USC senior outside hitter Tony Ciarelli was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week and Molten Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for his performances last week in a pair of road wins over No. 11 Pacific and top-ranked Stanford.
Ciarelli combined for 45 kills while hitting .364 in the wins in Northern California. He had a team-best 17 kills to go along with 8 digs and 4 blocks in the 4-set victory at Pacific. He then had a match-best 28 kills while hitting .451 and added 11 digs as No. 6 USC posted a 5-set upset at Stanford. He had the match-ending kill in the 15-13 fifth set.
This is the fourth time in his career that Ciarelli was named both the AVCA and MPSF Player of the Week. It is the 14th time in history that a Trojan has been recognized as the AVCA National Player of the Week.
USC, which has moved up to No. 4 in the national rankings, hosts a pair of matches this week against No. 13 Hawaii in the Galen Center, on Friday (March 2) at 7 p.m. and then a Sunday (March 4) matinee at 1 p.m. The jerseys of former Trojan All-Americans Steve Timmons and Adam Johnson will be retired in a ceremony following the March 2 match. Prior to that March 2 match, the Women of Troy will host Long Beach State in a spring scrimmage at 3:30 p.m.
