RIVERSIDE, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC women's water polo team gave up just three goals in two games today in action at the Lancer Invitational in Riverside, Calif. The Women of Troy followed up a 14-2 win over Pacific with a 27-1 blitz of Fresno Pacific to improve USC's overall record to 5-1 in these early goings of the 2012 season.
Sixteen different Trojans got in on the scoring action while the USC defense was dominant in today's games. Flora Bolonyai manned the cage for the first game to help USC pitch a second-half shutout of Pacific while gathering in nine saves in the win. The next game, Morgan Vickers took control of the cage, stopping five shots while she and the USC defense allowed just a single goal from Fresno Pacific.
Offensively, USC came out firing in both games as well. The Trojans rifled in five goals in the first frame against Pacific with scores from five different players. The fifth score came from freshman Savannah Fletcher, who wound up firing in four in the game to lead USC's scoring tally. USC's seventh scorer in the match was Olivia Cummins, who rang up her first career goal as a Trojan with a strike with one second left in regulation to top off a seven-goal scoring run for the Trojans to close out the 14-2 win over the Tigers.
After a short rest, the Women of Troy got back to action against Fresno Pacific and flexed its well-rounded muscle once again in moving ahead 10-0 in the first period of play. USC then peeled out to a 21-0 lead during the third frame before Fresno Pacific finally cracked the Trojan defense on a 6-on-5 score with 5:03 on the clock in the third. The Trojans kept ticking, however, sparked by Hannah Green's first career goals with back-to-back scores that answered Fresno Pacific's goal. By the final buzzer, sixteen Women of Troy had hit the back of the net in the 27-1 win, led by a career-high four from Kara-Leigh Huse to go along with hat tricks from newcomers Fletcher and Cummins.
Tomorrow's competition in Riverside has the Trojans going up against host Cal Baptist at 10:20 a.m. followed by a clash with Concordia at 11:40 a.m.
