LOS ANGELES - Stefan Sabol's solo homer in the eighth Friday snapped a 2-2 tie as the Oregon Ducks defeated the USC Trojans, 4-2, in the Pac-10 Conference series opener at Dedeaux Field. Tyler Anderson went 8 1/3 innings for the Ducks, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Danny Pulfer led Oregon (17-14, 2-5) with a 2-for-4 night with a double and two RBI. Andrew Triggs struck out nine batters in 6 2/3 innings for USC (13-20, 4-6), allowing two runs on six hits.
Matt Foat hit a one-out single in the Trojan half of the second before Adam Landecker flew out to right for what was thought to be the second out, but Oregon's Jack Marder was called for the catcher's interference to put runners at first and second. James Roberts grounded out to second as both runners advanced and freshman designated hitter Kevin Swick hit a two-run single up the middle for the 2-0 lead.
In the Oregon third, Paul Eshleman and KC Serna recorded singles before Pulfer hit a two-run double to center to tie the game at 2-2. Aaron Jones hit a double to center, moving to third when USC center fielder Garret Houts fumbled the ball. With the infielders drawn in, Triggs induced a ground out from Shawn Peterson and struck out Marder before another groundout from J.J. Altobelli to keep the Ducks off the scoreboard.
After a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fourth, Anderson went on to retire the next 14 batters in order.
With one out in the eighth, Sabol belted a 1-0 pitch from reliever Matt Munson to left for his first home run on the season. Brett Thomas doubled home Pulfer in the ninth for an insurance run. In the bottom of the ninth, Foat hit a one-out single up the middle as Oregon went to its bullpen to bring in closer Kellen Moen. On the first pitch, Adam Landecker hit a bullet line drive to first base as Peterson only needed a few steps for the unassisted double play to end the game.
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start and concluding on Sunday at noon. Both games will be broadcast live through a video webcast, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Andrew Triggs tied his career high of nine strikeouts, set last year on March 5 against New Mexico...Matt Foat recorded his fifth multi-hit game on the season, going 2-for-3 tonight.
