LOS ANGELES - Junior right-hander Austin Wood gave up just one run in 6 1/3 innings Saturday as the USC Trojans evened its Pac-10 Conference series with a 9-2 win against the Oregon Ducks at Dedeaux Field. Freshman shortstop James Roberts registered three hits and three RBI for the first time in his Trojan career while Alex Sherrod also had three hits in the game.
USC (14-20, 5-6) broke the game open with six runs in the eighth.
Danny Pulfer led Oregon (17-15, 2-6) with a 5-for-5 day. Duck starter Madison Boer took the loss after lasting 5 2/3 innings and relinquishing three runs on 10 hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Roberts delivered a hit-and-run single in the third to put runners at first and third for USC in the bottom of the third, but Boer got Kevin Roundtree to ground into a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play. Stefan Sabol led off the Oregon fourth with a double down the third base line and a walk to Aaron Jones put runners at first and second with no outs. Shawn Peterson's bunt attempt was too close to home as Roundtree threw to third to get the lead runner. Wood then got back-to-back flyouts from J.J. Altobelli and Jack Marder to keep the Ducks scoreless.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Sherrod and Adam Landecker hit back-to-back singles, followed by Roberts' single to right to plate Sherrod for the first run of the game. USC put runners at second and third in the fifth as Foat's RBI groundout scored Ricky Oropesa and a passed ball charged to catcher Brett Hambright gave USC the 3-0 advantage.
Ben Mount came in the game for Wood in the seventh and hit Brett Thomas to load the bases. Sabol hit a chopper to third that USC third baseman Adam Landecker grabbed. Landecker tagged third base for the force, but his throw to first for a possible double play pulled Oropesa off the bag as a run scored. Mount then got Jones to fly out to left to preserve a two-run lead.
Pinch-hitter Shane Boras came in with the bases loaded and two outs in the eighth, flaring an RBI single to left to start the six-run inning. Dylan Gavin's throwing error from third base led to two more run for the Trojans before Roberts delivered a two-run single to center to complete the scoring.
The series concludes tomorrow at noon and will be broadcast live through a video webcast, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
Notes: Shane Boras recorded his first hit of the season in six at-bats...Austin Wood has allowed just two runs in his last two starts (14 1/3 innings)...Matt Foat went 1-for-4 to extend his season-long hitting streak to nine games.
