USC junior outside hitter Tony Ciarelli was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week and Molten Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for his performances last week against No. 5 Stanford and No. 15 Pacific.
Ciarelli helped USC bounce back from its first loss of the season (at Pepperdine the previous week, when he hit just .097) with a 3-0 home sweep over defending NCAA champ as he posted a match-best 12 kills while hitting .667 (he had no hitting errors on 18 attempts) and he also served 5 aces, had 5 blocks, no reception errors on 15 attempts and just 1 serving errors on 24 attempts. Two nights later, in a 3-0 home sweep over Pacific, Ciarelli added 12 kills while hitting .357 (just 2 errors on 28 attempts), 2 aces, no reception errors on 19 attempts and no serving errors on 19 attempts.
This is the second time in his career that Ciarelli was named the AVCA and MPSF Player of the Week. It is the 12th time in history that a Trojan has been recognized as the AVCA National Player of the Week.
He is the second Trojan to be selected as the AVCA and MPSF Player of the Week in 2011. Teammate Murphy Troy was honored once by the AVCA and twice by the MPSF this season.
