PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The No. 2 USC women's water polo team posted its largest win over crosstown rival UCLA since 1999 with today's 13-3 win over the Bruins in the third-place game of the Stanford Invitational. The Women of Troy jumped out to an 8-0 lead against No. 5 UCLA, with goalie Tumua Anae pinning up 11 saves against the Bruins to keep UCLA quiet in the match. USC improves to 4-1 on the year with the win.
USC's last 10-goal margin of victory over the Bruins was an 11-1 win in the 1999 season. This first clash of 2010 between USC and UCLA was a rematch of last year's NCAA championship game, which the Bruins won 5-4. In today's face-off, the Women of Troy blasted the Bruins with a barrage of scoring in the first half while the Trojan defense kept UCLA silent for much of the half. UCLA stopped an 8-0 USC scoring run with a score late in the half to make it 8-1 USC at halftime. USC's scoring onslaught in the game was widespread once again, as eight Women of Troy scored in the win
The teams traded scores in the third with USC getting a score on a 5-meter penalty shot earned by Kally Lucas and put away by Patricia Jancso. In the fourth, with USC leading 9-2, the Trojans peeled out by 10 with a Lucas shot and score on a Trojan 6-on-5 and a pair of strikes out of set from Sarah Van Norman. Meanwhile, Anae was holding court in the cage with a couple stops against UCLA 6-on-5 chances, and USC was up 12-2. The Trojans made it 13-2 on a blast from Alexandra Kiss before the shot clock, and UCLA would get one through in the final minute to finish out a 13-3 USC win that gave the Trojans a third-place finish at the Stanford Invitational at Avery Aquatic Center.
USC now returns home for its first home game of the season in a 12 p.m. clash with LMU on Saturday (Feb. 13) at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
