IRVINE, CALIF. - The No. 2 USC women's water polo team powered up for a 15-5 road win over No. 11 host UC Irvine on Saturday afternoon, with senior Alexandra Kiss and Kally Lucas each tallying hat tricks in the game for the Women of Troy. USC scored 10 goals in the middle two periods to leave the Anteaters behind, in their nonconference clash. The Trojans improve to 6-1 overall with today's win.
UC Irvine got the first goal of the game, but the Women of Troy responded with three in the first period to move into the lead to stay. Another Anteater goal opened the second frame, and USC again whipped together a string of goals to take over the game. Six straight USC scores carried the Trojans ahead 9-2 early in the third period before UCI got back on the board. USC finished out the third period with another five goals, however, putting the Anteaters behind 13-4 entering the final period of play.
USC goalie Tumua Anae secured seven saves during her time in the cage for the first three periods before Courtney Ray took over and grabbed two more stops for the Trojans as UCI put just one goal through in the fourth period. The Trojans punched in two more before the final buzzer, leaving USC with a 15-5 victory on the hands of eight different scorers. Kiss and Lucas led the way with three each, with Joelle Bekhazi, Patricia Jancso and Kristen Dronberger adding two each. Freshmen Dominique Sardo, Chelsea Silvers and Nicolina McCall also scored for the Women of Troy.
USC's next competition brings Hawaii to town for a 5 p.m. game on Thursday (Feb. 25) at McDonald's Swim Stadium before the Trojans go back down to Irvine for weekend competition at the UC Irvine Invitational on Feb. 27-28.
