Pepperdine Men's Volleyball Sweeps No. 2 USC

Maurice Torres had 16 kills and teammates J.D. Schleppenbach and Cory Riecks each added 12 kills to lead the No. 7-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-28, 30-26 sweep over No. 2 USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (Feb. 12) at USC's Galen Center.
The Waves, who came back from a 2-1 deficit to beat USC in 5 sets in Malibu 2 weeks ago, won their fourth consecutive match to improve to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the MPSF. The Trojans, who have lost 3 of their past 4 matches, dropped to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the MPSF.
Pepperdine hit .327 in the match to USC's .274 and the Waves' 34 digs were 12 more than the Trojans' total.
Schleppenbach was among 3 Waves who hit at least.400, as he was at .409 while Tyler Jaynes hit .538 with 8 kills and Rodnei Santos hit .400 with 5 kills. Schleppenbach had 7 digs, Sean Grubbs added a match-best 10 digs and Kasey Crider had 9 digs. Jaynes and Santos each had 4 blocks.
For USC, Murphy Troy had 16 kills, Tony Ciarelli added 13 kills and 4 blocks and Austin Zahn hit .556 with 12 kills and 4 blocks. Tri Bourne had 6 digs.
USC was in control of the first half of the opening set, up 16-12, but the Waves caught up at 20-20 and then consecutive kills by Riecks and Schleppenbach gave Pepperdine a 26-24 lead that the Trojans couldn't overcome. In the second set, USC withstood a 6-point Wave run that forged a 17-12 lead and then the Trojans evened the scored at 21-21, but a Schleppenbach kill followed by a USC hitting error closed out the set. Pepperdine scored 7 consecutive points in the third set to build a 25-20 margin and USC could never recover as the Waves hit a blistering .441 in the set.
The Trojans next host a pair of MPSF matches in the Galen Center, versus Pacific on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and No. 5 Stanford on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m.
